game of thrones outfit inspiration: brienne

Last night was a round-up of sorts, and maybe even a let down from the action-packed past few weeks. But then Brienne fought a bear. A freaking bear. In a dress. So because she fought a bear and kept her composure under fear of death and humiliation, she definitely wins this episode. (Jaime comes in a close second solely for the line “half a million” when the maester pointedly asked how many people he’s saved in his lifetime.)

We know Brienne is more comfortable in armor than anything, but we can still pay homage to our friend and get dressed for the city streets instead of a medieval battle.

fancy brienne

Metallic, of course. And she’d probably toughen up a sweet dress with a leather jacket. Brienne is no Cinderella and certainly needs no Prince Charming, so her slippers aren’t quite glass. Her earrings hint at her home, the Sapphire Island, where the water is a beautiful blue.

casual brienne

In a more casual setting, we can give a shout out to Brienne with a metallic sheen and a tough wrist cuff reminiscent of her armor. I’d like to think Brienne is coming to her own and would proudly be that tall girl wearing heels. She knows she’s a bad B.

I’ve also made outfits inspired by JaimeAryaMargaery, Daenerys, and Jon Snow. Who’s your favorite?

i carry your heart with me (embroidery no. 9 and happy mother’s day)

i carry your heart embroidery

This one is for my mom. Most of you are familiar with this E. E. Cummings love poem, but I believe this particular line can speak to many kinds of love.

I don’t live near my mom. My parents are in Atlanta where today I believe they are going on a motorcycle ride in the nice Southern weather. So we can’t spend this Mother’s Day, or many other days, together. But my mom has made me strong, so that I can come to New York and go to work and build a life. I bring her strength and her love with me always.

I talk to my mom just about every day. (I asked my sister once if you need your mom less when you get older. She said no.) She listens to me when I go on and on about some boring thing that I’m now super interested in, or she lets me explain the plot of whatever book I’m reading, and she celebrates with me when things are good, and is sad with me when things are sad.

blue blazer

blue blazer rae's days

Sometimes all it takes is once good piece. This blue blazer is a good piece. It’s a lovely cobalt blue. I got it from Marshalls. I’ve been mostly wearing it with black because it’s a nice contrast, and I recently wore this same outfit but with leopard print heels and I like it even more. I’ve also thrown it on with jeans, and I’m sure it would look good with a few dresses in my closet. When you see an item of clothing you love, I say go for it. It can take you far.

p.s. Man I can’t wait to get my hair cut. Maybe next week.

trapped (or, reading under the dome)

under the dome

I’m almost finished with Under the Dome (Kindle version here). In it, a town called Chester’s Mill in Maine gets trapped under, well, a dome that’s exactly the shape of the town. No one can get in and no one can get out. This town is left to its own devices as it tries to keep order and figure out how to survive cut off from the rest of the world. Because it’s Stephen King, there’s also a lot of murder and some sci-fi thrown in, and I am having a blast reading it.

But it also terrifies me. And I don’t mean just getting a little jumpy. I mean the concept of being cut off from everything else really truly scares me.

game of thrones outfit inspiration: jon snow

I think we can all agree mostly everyone on Game of Thrones right now is losing. The Lannisters are down a hand and up two unwanted fiances. The Starks are all over the map, losing battles and friends. So I think Jon wins this week because he made it up and over a 700-foot wall made out of ice. Did you guys see that climb? Holy wow.

Jon has joined the Night’s Watch, where the men are nicknamed crows and wear all black. They have to bundle up because, well, it’s cold up there and they live on a giant block of ice. If we were to take Jon’s style and apply it to now, I think it would look something like this.

inspired by jon snow

A leather dress, feather coat, and a bracelet decorated with skulls? Seems like a pretty accurate representation of the Night’s Watch to me. But if you have to go out and not look like a super awesome, slightly trashy grunge heiress, maybe you’d try something like this.

adventures in spray paint

rae's days shelf before

I have this shelf by my door. I use it to hold my purse or shoes right when I get home. It’s the perfect size for the tiny space between my front door and my closet. And it was black, which was fine. But not great.

So I got some spray paint. And headed to a rooftop.

roof top view

This was the view. Not too shabby. Then I put my shelf on some trash bags and started spraying. It went pretty well for my first time spray painting something, all things considered. I did a few coats and touched up some spots where I thought it was needed. I used Rust-Oleum high performance enamel spray paint in safety yellow.

pillow talk

rae's days couch

It’s finally time for Apartment Therapy’s Small Cool Spaces contest! I can’t wait to enter, but first I have a few finishing touches to complete for my apartment. One of those touches is these throw pillows.

throw pillows

I made them! Well, I made the pillow cases, anyway. The pillow forms I got from Ikea.

sweater to sweatpants

sweater rae's days

Sometimes my work outfit transitions from a day in the office to a night on the town. And sometimes it transitions into a night on my couch.

T-shirt and sweater from target, shoes and skirt from …. I can’t remember. Probably a department store. I like how the orange works with the gray and yellow striped sweater. A comfortable outfit plus pops of color? Sign me up any day of the week.

And when I get home, all I have to do is switch the skirt for some sweatpants, grab my kindle, and settle in on my couch with #fatcat. And sometimes it doesn’t get much better than that.

end of the month review: april

Can you believe April is over? I feel like I say this every month, but this year is really flying. April was a wonderful flurry of friends and family and good times, and now it’s over! On to May, and even more fun, but first a look at the top-viewed posts from April.

I went to Brooklyn Flea over the weekend. This is the view of Manhattan from the Williamsburg waterfront, where they host the flea market.

While I was there I bought this adorable towel now hanging in my kitchen. Look at that fat little penguin!
