new outfit: winter lounging

winter lounging

This has been a VERY COLD February for Chicago. I thought I could skip Winter Dread this year, but it just arrived a little late. To stay warm lounging around the house, I am wearing sweater leggings from American Apparel, and a sweatshirt and scarf from Target. When I have to go outside, I put on my warmest puffy coat and my new Jessica Simpson rain boots. My Bulls hat was a gift, and it keeps me warm and repping Chicago.

outfits of boy from boy, snow, bird

clothes from boy, snow, bird

Using The Fashion Sketchpad to help me draw and watercolors to help me paint, I imagined what Boy, one of the main characters in Boy, Snow, Bird (Kindle here) by Helen Oyeyemi, would be wearing.

Boy is an icy blond who once took a magazine quiz called “Are you frigid?” and got the highest (coldest?) score. Boy’s stepdaughter Snow said that Boy’s wedding dress made her look like a statue. So after she was married, when her life got more complicated and she kept her emotions even further under the surface, I pictured her in creams and whites.

It’s often mentioned her skirts hit the floor, which I think makes her seem more regal, like an evil queen stepmother. Her skirts aren’t very swishy, and she wouldn’t have a lot of bows or frills. She is statuesque and hard to read, and she knows what flatters her figure. Boy’s clothing is her amour, and she doesn’t let many people in. Even after she’s been “interfering” with Arturo, she stays tied up tight in his white shirt and tie, always with her snake bracelet around her arm.

I pictured her in her red date dress, which she got when one of her father’s girlfriends left it behind. It was a kind of silk, and probably didn’t fit her exactly right, but I bet she was still a knockout. The next outfit is after she was married, as Bird describes her on a regular day. On her wedding day, her dress was simple and sleek, and I imagined a few red roses to match Arturo’s red bow tie. And her navy coat is the one she wore when she was saw her mirrored self, right before she kissed Arturo.

You can see my post on Boy, Snow, Bird here.

new outfit: blizzard

Polar Vortex II has kept me in Chicago for a few days longer than I expected. Luckily, I have access to a washer and dryer, so at least my reused outfits will be clean. But the same clothes every day can get a little boring sometimes. To stay warm in the frigid air, I piled on the layers.

My boots are from Banana Republic. Scarf from Target. Coat was a gift from my mom.

I hope everyone is staying warm!

new outfit: sweater weather at work

rae's days outfit of the day for work
Today in New York it is rainy and snowy and blustery. But on another day last week, when it was more like fall and less like winter, I wore this sweater to work. I love the colors on it–it looks so fall to me. I paired it with a black pencil skirt and leopard shoes, and I felt cute and warm.

If I were to wear this outfit today, though, I’d add some tights and boots. For a more casual office, you could do jeans and a puffy vest.

Skirt from Banana Republic, shoes and bag from Target, sweater from JC Penney, chambray from Land’s End.

welcome picnic and what i wore

picnic outfit

As you guys know over the weekend I went to a wedding and had a blast. The day before the wedding, our friends hosted a welcome picnic for the guests to relax and get to know each other. It was at the venue, which was gorgeous, and the food was good and the company was even better. This is what I wore.

Pants from Banana Republic, shoes and top from Target, sweater from Uniqlo, and clutch from Kate Spade.

new outfit: casual

rae's days casual

Sometimes, when you need to run errands and pack and just get stuff done, casual is the way to go. This weekend was one of those times. So I threw on a plain gray top, some trusty navy shorts, my leopard flats, grabbed my tote bag and walked out the door. An easy, simple look for when your day is not.

new outfit: a touch of fall

20130906-113457.jpg
All of a sudden it feels a bit like fall. This was quite unexpected for me, but here we are. I’m wrapping up the week with some fall colors and patterns: black, deep yellow, and leopard.

Skirt from Banana Republic; shoes, top, and bag from Target.

I’m so glad it’s almost the weekend. Had a short week this week, and I’ll have an even shorter one next week. This weekend will be for last minute wedding prep–laundry, speech writing, and packing for sure. Happy Friday!

what would glitz wear

glitz

I’m a little more than halfway through Glitz (Kindle here), my first Elmore Leonard novel. I can see why they make great movies. The dialogue is natural and entertaining, and the characters are interesting–from the off-duty detective to the casino’s lounge singer to the gangster’s bodyguard. I like how the women are equal players. Nancy Donovan is smarter than most–if not all–of the men surrounding her, including her husband. Linda is comfortable in her personality and ready to make her own way as an artist. They may have to play a man’s game, but they rewrite a few rules.

These women are sexy, but they aren’t just there for sex. But I bet no matter what they are doing, they look good doing it.

nancy donovan in glitz

Like Gretchen Wieners, Nancy keeps secrets in her perfectly coiffed hair. She runs a casino with her husband, Tom, and at least one Atlantic City gangster. And she can run circles around them. Nancy is always put together and she is not to be trifled with.

iris

Iris is a young, beautiful girl from Puerto Rico who dreams of being a hostess in the United States. She is spunky and fun but, man, does she have some bad luck.

linda

Linda Moon befriends Iris in Atlantic City. Out of all these women, I’d most like to be friends with her. She has her head on straight and is following her passion for making music. But she’s practical, too, and has figured out a way to make a living by singing in Nancy and Tom’s casino. And, like the rest of the casino, she could be decked out in gold when she performs.

ladonna in glitz

Ladonna is the former Miss Oklahoma. But I’m afraid she’s fallen a bit from when she took the crown. Now we never see her without a drink in her hand, and she’s terrified for her life because of the violence surrounding her. We first meet her drowning in both an oversized sweater and an oversized bloody mary.

I can’t wait to read more about these women, and the rest of the characters. More on Glitz soon!

new outfit: patterned pants

rae's days ootd new pants

I’ve been looking for patterned pants for a while now and finally stumbled on the perfect pair from Banana Republic. I’ve been so into green lately, and these are green and gorgeous and have a cute, tiny pattern that doesn’t overwhelm. I paired them with a gray T and my blue blazer. I can’t wait to wear these with a thousand things–like Jack Donaghy I’m into power clashing.

Pants from Banana Republic, shoes/T shirt from Target, bag from H&M, blazer from Marshals.

Happy Labor Day weekend! I hope everyone has a safe, fun long weekend. I’m planning lots of relaxing and hopefully some fun in the sun.

new outfit: summer brights

rae's days work outfit

Teal, orange, and yellow are a few of my favorite colors. And while it’s still summer, I’m going to keep wearing brights. (Though let’s be real, I’ll keep wearing them in winter, too.) Shoes from JC Penney, skirt from the Loft, sweater and bag from Target, necklace from H&M.
