new outfit: winter lounging

winter lounging

This has been a VERY COLD February for Chicago. I thought I could skip Winter Dread this year, but it just arrived a little late. To stay warm lounging around the house, I am wearing sweater leggings from American Apparel, and a sweatshirt and scarf from Target. When I have to go outside, I put on my warmest puffy coat and my new Jessica Simpson rain boots. My Bulls hat was a gift, and it keeps me warm and repping Chicago.

outfit for the office on a cold day

We are SO CLOSE to the beginning of the end of winter, but unfortunately we’re not there yet. I finally replaced my snow boots with these from Macy’s, and I like them very much, but in cold weather you’ll need an additional liner or extra-warm socks. This outfit helped me stay warm in the office with lots of layers, a warm sweater, and fleece-lined tights.

Boots are from Macy’s, sweater from Penney’s, purse from Target, black button up is DKNYC. It’s another gray day here today but I hope it’s sunny and warm where you are.

Also, if you want to sign up for my newsletter on books, tv, stuff I think is cool, and couples I’m currently shipping, you can right here!

a good coat

A good coat in the winter is a powerful outfit saver. It doesn’t matter what’s under it because no one will see it while you’re out running errands! This one is Ann Taylor (I think) via a department store. Boots are Jessica Simpson and purse is from Target. The scarf I made myself. Stay warm everyone!

new outfit: errands on a chilly day

IMG_8675
It’s the day before Thanksgiving! Time to do any last minute errands and traveling before the cooking begins. If you have any running around to do, I hope it goes quickly, safely, and that the weather isn’t too bad.

Over the weekend when I was running my own errands I wore my new Michael Kors coat from Macy’s, my scarf from the boys section at H&M, plus jeans, boots, and furry earmuffs that are stables in my winter wardrobe. (Probably they all came from Macy’s too, but I cannot remember.)

I’ve hopped over to Kansas for a few days to see my family, and I’m very glad to be here. Wishing you and yours a great holiday.

new outfit: sweater weather

fall sweater

October is my favorite month. I love the crispness of fall weather, the changing leaves, and finally getting to wear scarves again. And, of course, the return of sweater weather.

This sweater is one of my favorites, and I’ve paired it here with black and gold  accessories. Shoes and bag are from Target, button down is from the Loft, and the sweater is from JCPenney.

I am planning to drink lots of hot coffee and watch a lot of baseball this month, what’s your favorite part of October?

(Outfit posts seem super silly after a week like this one, no? But in rough times you’ve got to make good art, and, well, right now this is my art.)

I work very close to Millennium Park, and every Monday this summer they had a free concert as part of Downtown Sound. I was able to go this week and have a great picnic dinner and listen to some cool music from Russian Circles and Colin Stetson. What a great summer activity! I wish I had been able to go to more shows.

For this show, I wore shorts from the Loft, a shirt from Francesca’s Closet, and a necklace from Target. (I think.)

rae's days handmade dress

I have been thinking a long time about sewing a dress or outfit but it took me a long time to pull the trigger. It sounded intimidating–I have sewn a little bit but not really any clothes. Patterns and fabric seemed expensive and difficult to try out if I wasn’t sure it would turn out.

But then I saw Corinne’s tunic on the Purl Bee. It looked just simple enough that maybe I could do it. And it looked so cute on their Facebook page. (And it only needs 2 yards of fabric!)

So I picked up a few yards of a light gray cotton from JoAnn’s and got to sewing! I don’t have instructions because the Purl Bee already has all that covered. It took a few hours, and ripping out a few seams, but I think it was a great, simple dress for a beginning project.

And the best part is, now I’m ready to sew a lot more!

Sometimes you just need to get things done. I am getting ready for another trip and I prioritized function over from with my Mizzou gym shorts and trusty dinosaur sweatshirt from Topshop (thanks polar vortex in July).

I’m so excited to be heading back to Michigan, but right now there’s a pretty big to-do list between me and the pool. Once I get there, though, I’m hoping to keep reading the Preacher and keep practicing drawing (you can follow along on instagram). Alright, gotta get back to it–

new outfit: getting ready for the fourth

Happy almost Fourth of July! After some crazy storms this week it’s been a little cooler here in Chicago so I’m wearing jeans from the Gap, sandals from Target, a bag from H&M, and a top from Liz Claiborne.

There was obviously no podcast this week–we are taking a break for the Fourth. But we’ll be back at it for the next one. I am having friends come into town this weekend, and #fatcat and I couldn’t be more excited. At least, I think he’s excited.

Have a safe and fun holiday weekend!

the zoo and what i wore

a casual summer outfit

Over the weekend I had a wonderful time at the Lincoln Park Zoo. The weather was perfect and all the animals were out and doing something adorable and interesting.

My casual summer adventure outfit is a cotton dress from H&M; shoes, bag, and sunglasses from Target; and chambray from … shoot I can’t remember.

After the zoo we walked to the lake to take a look at the skyline. It was a lovely day.

Also, it was super cool to be featured as the Chicago Tribune’s reader of the week! Check it out!
