on the waterfront

waterfront

This weekend it was so beautiful outside. Lucky for me, I got to hang out in the gorgeous weather in some equally beautiful settings. On Saturday I went to the waterfront in Williamsburg with some friends for Smorgasburg, a sort of food booth fair. It was delicious.

And this is what I wore.

Dress from Banana Republic; shoes, purse, watch, and sunglasses from Target; top from Top Shop.

breaking bad and what i wore

Breaking Bad comes back this weekend. On Sunday, Aug. 11, we will begin the final episodes. I am so excited I can hardly stand it. I missed the boat on a lot of television until it was over. I love that I am watching this in real time and experiencing it with everyone else. People are buzzing, and I’m having a great time getting caught up in the excitement.

I was lucky to get tickets to a Breaking Bad panel last week at Lincoln Center, where I watched episodes that the cast chose, and then sat for a Q&A with some of the actors and the show’s creator Vince Gilligan.

To say it was fun and interesting would be like calling Breaking Bad mildly exciting.

saga: white outfit inspiration

I just read a graphic novel for the first time. It’s called Saga, vol. 1, by Brian K. Vaughan. It was cool! Ever the speed reader, I had to remind myself to not just read the text, but to really take a look at the images. It’s kind of a love, adventure, space travel, war story, I think.

Check out this Bad B and my new best friend, #lyingcat. He can tell if you’re lying.

saga, lying cat

I don’t know this woman’s (is it a woman?) name, but I do know I like her sense of style. I love an all white look but can rarely pull it off because I tend to spill my coffee. A lot. If I were to do an all white look any way I wanted, I might do something like this. With a bold, pointy ring to represent her horn, of course.

all white

More on Saga this weekend after book club. Until then, try this monochrome thing, and may you carry your Tide pen with you.

rooftops and new skirts

metropolitan museum of art rooftop

I had a lovely weekend. A great friend came into town, I ate a lot of really good food, and I spent an inordinate amount of time on rooftops. This particular rooftop view is from the top of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In the summer, they open the roof for drinks and sculpture on Friday afternoons, and it’s really lovely. I ordered a fancy, boozy snowcone.

met drinks

It was pomegranate flavored. While I was taking pictures, I spilled some of my pomegranate boozy snowcone on my new skirt.

hot hot hot

What do you do when it’s this hot outside and you need to look professional at work but your commute includes walking in the sun and riding on hot trains?

Well, start with the bare minimum: a sleeveless dress and sandals.

Once you get to work, replace your sandals with some heels and add a blazer. Then realize you never should have kidded yourself about wearing your hair down, look for a hair elastic, and never find one.

Then hope your AC holds up for the rest of the day. Happy Friday!

miss blue glass and miss green glass

In Boy’s Life, which I totally loved, two sisters named Sonia and Katherina Glass were almost perfect mirror images of each other–except one always wore blue and the other green.

Now that is style. They adopted a uniform, dressed as themselves, and went with it. Plus monochrome can really be a great look. I don’t own enough of one color (except black) to pull off monochrome looks very often–and I have a pretty strong aversion to matching. But in honor of Miss Blue Glass and Miss Green Glass, let’s take a look at some killer blue and green clothes and accessories we could wear in our own lives.

blue

blueaccessories

I’m really into blue. It’s one of my favorite colors and I just think it’s beautiful–like the ocean and sky. Plus blue jeans are blue, so you’ve got that going for you. But I was surprised at how much I liked these greens.

Gorgeous, right? Emerald and mint are really growing on me. Maybe soon I’ll give up mismatching for one day and pick a color and stick with it.

stripes, three ways

all stripes, all the time

I am so into stripes. I got this outfit a few weeks ago an can’t stop wearing it. Well, at least parts of it. It’s separates! Separates that go together and look like a great striped dress. It’s so comfortable and light for summer–I really can’t get enough of this skirt and top from the Loft.

work stripes

So I keep wearing it. Lots of ways. This time with a white pencil skirt. Ready for summer and ready for work. And if you’re going somewhere more casual…

striped skirt

Always add a gray T-shirt. And if you’re feeling it, tie it in a knot for a summertime crop top.

Now go forth and mix and match!

summer brights

Summer seems to have arrived in New York. We’ve had a few good beach days, and today is just gorgeous. Summer is my favorite season in the city–I am certain there is no more fun place than New York in the summertime. To bring some of that cheer inside, I brought out some bright colors. Shirt from Marshall’s, shoes from Zara, bag from H&M, watch from the men’s section in Target. Skirt was a gift.

new outfit: blush

pink shirt

Back from vacation means back to work. At least I have new clothes. Shirt is from Marshalls, shoes from Target, purse from H&M, skirt from Zara.

I’m really into the light pink color. I like to call it blush, so I will. I’m also really into this light, floaty sheer fabric. It seems good for summer. I felt feminine and cute, but still professional. Which is a win-win, I think.

I started a new role at work this week. It’s been busy, and I’m not totally comfortable yet, but it’s good. When I’m unsure of myself, I feel a lot better when I am sure of my outfit. Clothes can be like armor, you know?

work outfit: green and black

outfit

Well, I hate to say it, but I’m on vacation and my week has been full of vacation clothes and swim suits.

Actually, I don’t hate to say that at all. But more on vacation style later.

This outfit was from last week at the office. Pencil skirt from Zara, shoes and shirt and necklace from Target. Purse from H&M. I really like how the dark green and black play off the leopard print shoes. Easy to wear and I felt really good in it.

You can see another time I’ve worn this shirt here.
