all about the dress

Dresses are so great. You only have to put on one thing and you are totally professional and put together. It couldn’t be easier!

dress

I love this dress. I love the lines, I love the color, I love how it goes with tights because it’s still cold out. And on that note, I love that it looks just as good with or without my coat.

What do you do to make getting dressed easier?

game of thrones outfit inspiration: margaery

I’m so glad to be back in the TV land of Game of Thrones. George R.R. Martin has created a beautiful and dense world, full of intrigue and crisscrossing relationships. And the sets and dragons on the show are certainly nothing to sneeze at. Last night was the first episode of the third season on this HBO hit.

Margaery won the episode with her manipulative schmoozing at the orphanage and the dinner table. What to wear when having dinner with your hopefully future husband (and current psycho king) and his powerful and beautiful mother? Lets take a cue from Margaery and dress to our assets.

margaery

Margaery knows she’s beautiful, and she knows how to play that up. The cut outs are perfect. A flash of skin can be sexy and classy. It shows her confidence and beauty without trying too hard or going overboard. Understated kingdom-stealing with a positive, no-nonsense attitude is what we’re going for here. In real life, that might translate to something like this.

red

You are bringing your A game if you pair a cut out top with silver pumps, that’s for sure. However, if you want to make a good impression on your maybe future mother in law and aren’t trying to steal the crown from her cold, jewel-adorned fingers, I’d recommend showing a little less skin, but still showing off a little bit of a fun. Maybe like this.

Whether you want to show off your sweet or sassy side, I bet Margaery has a lot to teach us. Let’s check in again on our favorite wannabe kings and queens next week?

(almost) spring

Welcome to Spring. Officially it arrived last Wednesday, but yesterday it snowed so who can really say for sure. I’m past the point of all my tights this season having runs in them but not wanting to buy new ones because it’s supposed to be warm out. Which leads me to the wonderful world of pants.

work look of the day

Pants from Express a thousand seasons ago, shoes from Penneys (I think), purse from Target, sweater from Uniqlo, shirt from my mom.

I tried to welcome spring with at least a few bright colors, even though I’m still wearing layer upon layer so I don’t freeze. Hope at least some of you are getting nice weather! I’m getting tired of dressing for warmth.

design question

I need help. (I mean, it’s not that serious, it’s a decorating problem, but I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.)

I’ve been obsessed with getting my apartment as close to finished as possible, and I’m a little stuck with the wall in my bedroom.

bedroom polka dots

Ideally, I’d love to hang an elaborately framed mirror above the bed, but I got a little skittish about hanging a heavy mirror in my rented apartment and also paying for a mirror. So I saw these very cheap black circle mouse pad and thought, why not? So I echoed what I did in my living room….

living room

…but in my bedroom. My worry is that it might look a little immature in my bedroom, where it’s large black polka dots and bright colors. On the other hand, it’s a cheap way to build on a polka dot theme and decorate the wall above my bed. What do you think, yay or nay? What else could I do there that will still let me keep my deposit?

Also, I’ve updated the living room since this picture was taken as well. I can’t wait til it’s ready to show you everything. Back to books and crafts and such later on this week, thanks for helping me get this out of my head and taken care of!

work it

outfit1_MG_0488

I’m going on week three back at the office, which means week three of high heels and pencil skirts. Lucky for me, that’s one of my favorite combinations. My top and shoes are from Target, Skirt from Zara. Bag is good for airplane rides.

For me, this combo of a plain top, professional skirt and high heels is a quick and easy uniform for days when I’m not feeling that creative or awake. When I wake up late and am rushed, I know this will look put together and polished. And the best part is, there are endless combinations. Whether it’s a forest green skirt, cream top and leopard heels like this look, or a black skirt, black top and orange heels, like the look I wore yesterday. The silhouette works on me and is professional, so I can play around with the colors and patterns.

apartment update

One of my goals this year was to get my apartment ready in time to enter it in Apartment Therapy’s Small Cool Spaces contest. I believe it’s usually in April, which gives me about one more month to put on the final touches. Back in November, I listed some of my dream goals for my apartment. So how am I doing?

fatcat comforter

#fatcat on my new duvet cover, which is one thing on my list I crossed off.

for the living room/kitchen

  • get a cowhide rug for the living room, poking out from under the couch
  • buy (or make!) some giant, round crocheted round rugs for under the table and desk–Still on the search for the perfect rugs for these spots
  • find a cool umbrella stand for next to my front door
  • place a tiny table or shelf on the wall next to my front door, and maybe a home sweet home artwork or something of the sort —I did find the perfect sized shelves for next to my front door, but I still want to paint them and add a home sweet home artwork for above where I hang my keys.
  • print this gunslinger-inspired print for above my bookshelf–I didn’t end up using that print, but I did fill my wall with paintings that my family and I made.

raes days art wall

  • buy and paint some crown molding to frame my full length mirrors
  • get a chair for my kitchen table–I ended up using this chair for my desk instead of my kitchen table. My mom has an amazing black and white chair I’m hoping to get my hands on soon for the kitchen area
  • and some folding chairs for guests
  • get more magnets to keep putting photo on my fridge/front door–This is probably the easiest thing on the list so of course I haven’t done it yet
  • use washi tape to cover up some tile I don’t like in the bathroom–I have ordered some washi tape and I hope to do this as soon as it arrives

for the bedroom

  • this handy craft to make a jewelry holder (i already have the frame)–Done!

raes days jewelry holder

  • I’ve fallen in love with this duvet cover–Also done! I had a moment of panic a few days ago when I realized that I still wanted this duvet cover and it was most likely out of stock. So I looked online–where it was sold out–and check if it was available in stores–it mostly wasn’t–until I found ONE left at a Crate & Barrel in the city. So I called them, ordered it, and picked it up later that day. And the best part was that it was for less than half of the original price. I wouldn’t recommend this as a game plan, though, if it’s something you really want.
  • paint screens to use as a headboard–I have a different plan for my headboard now, but I love the way I’m using these screens instead.

raes days picture shutters

  • yet another round rug for next to the bed–Right now I’m leaning toward using faux sheepskin instead of a round rug

So, I’ve crossed some items off, changed my mind on a few things, and am still waiting to accomplish a few more. Not bad, but I better pick up the pace. I can’t wait to get everything done and share it with you.

a little neon

Sometimes, in the dead of winter when I’m dreaming of beach vacation, it helps me to wear a little pop of color. Or, well, a lot.

neon office look

Dress from H&M, sweater from Uniqlo (and inspired by my friend Anna who had a cardigan in a similar color that I was obsessed with), Hue tights and shoes from Penneys. Belt is one that came with another skirt.

Wearing bright colors in winter was one part an effort to pretend I didn’t have a cold, one part a way to convince me it was warmer than it actually was, and one part just plain fun. Try it! It’s a guaranteed pick-me-up on gray days. When you’re ready to ditch work and head to fun, dress it up a little differently. Like this.

neon casual

I undid the belt, threw on some leopard flats from Target and donned a silk scarf as a headband. When it warms up I’ll ditch the tights and the sweater and have a whole new look. Don’t let anyone tell you that a hot pink dress isn’t versatile.

back to work

back to work outfit

I went back to my office last week for the first time since Hurricane Sandy. It was like the Twilight Zone. I had notes on my desk about reports we did three months ago. My calendar was open to October. I found a box of pop tarts in my drawer–they were still good.

I tend to wear more skirts than pants, but I felt good in this outfit. Pants from the Gap, shoes from Target, blazer from Penneys, top from the Loft. I like how the polka dots in the shirt pick up the same colors as the leopard print in my shoes. It gave me just enough pep in my step as I walked around the office for the first time in almost four months.

mary poppins bag (or my travel carry on)

I had such a great time traveling this past weekend. I got to spend time with my friend Jewels (of Oven Lovin) and meet a lot of really great people in her life. I was going to do this post about what to wear while traveling but over the weekend I realized my most important accessory was my carry-on bag.

carry on tote bag

My cousin gave me this bag. It’s the perfect color, goes with everything, is sturdy and sleek enough to be somewhat fancy, but can also go with casual things. And the best part is that it can fit everything I need to take with me on a plane AND zip all the way. Here’s what I had in it:

what's in your bag

The book I’m reading for book club, last week’s New York, my wallet, gloves, ear muffs, an umbrella, air plane snacks, my computer, headphones, a notebook, pens, toothpaste, Advil, sunglasses, regular glasses, my phone, my camera and a giant water bottle (last few items not pictured). What more could a girl need?

What do you carry when you travel? I probably overpacked, but since it all fit and zipped up, I couldn’t help myself. I felt so prepared.

cold weather gear

look of the day

As you might have heard, the Northeast got quite a blizzard last weekend. New York got some snow but definitely not as much as other places. I spent most of the weekend inside and crafting, but when I did run out, I made sure I was bundled up and waterproof. Mostly.

I’m wearing rain boots from Banana Republic, and a coat and scarf from Penneys. The rest is basic leggings, black top, black skirt from an assortment of places, none of which I can remember. I stayed warm and my feet stayed dry.

Have a great long weekend if you have one! I’m heading out of town, so I’ll see you Tuesday.
