project life: may

It’s been a very busy summer. A wonderful, fun-filled, busy summer. I’m a little behind on project life, but these are the pages I made from a weekend trip in May. This was to celebrate my best friend Jewels‘ upcoming wedding.

We had so much fun. There was so much more I could have included, maybe I will go back and add a page or an insert. (Actually the more I think on this, the more I want to add things.)

We went to a baseball game, went to brunch, and went to some bars, but most of all we just enjoyed being around each other and celebrating our friend.

I used some sticker letters, and I also got maybe carried away with my new paper punch that makes the corners round. Other than that I used scrapbook paper and project life inserts. I have more pages to do for family vacation and the rest of June and July, so stay tuned.

God bless you, but… (embroidery no. 12)

When a dome falls over your entire town, cutting you off from the rest of the world, things can get a little stressful. One of my favorite parts of the book (and show!) was watching how people handled that stress–whether it was admirable or terrifying.

project life update: apartment

As you guys know, I entered my apartment into the Small Cool Spaces contest last month. (They are judging the finalists now, hop over and take a look!) It was so great to get my apartment in good shape and to show it off. And it was fun again to look back at everything for Project Life.

I used the pictures that I entered into the contest, plus a few that I have posted on here. I also included my shelf and pillow projects because I did those to get my apartment ready.

I used an insert for screenshots of my Apartment Therapy entry and for the first page of my blog entry on the contest. The quote cards are available for free here, on Elise Blaha Cripe’s blog Enjoy It.

It’s about halfway through the year and I’m still doing project life fairly consistently. I’ll likely add another few pages for May that have to do with the trip I took to Washington D.C. But that was so much fun I need some extra time to get it together.

chapter 19 (embroidery no. 10)

I did something a little different for today’s embroidery. For those of us who grew up with Harry Potter, a charming part of those books were the illustrations in the American version at the top of each chapter. I had a small embroidery hoop lying around that was really the perfect size to fit the drawings at the top of the page–just a few inches across. So I took my paperback of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and picked one of my favorite illustrations. And using the back stitch and Sublime Stitching’s tutorial for the chain stitch, this is what I came up with!

everyone was going (embroidery no. 8)

This week’s quote is from Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. I loved the characters in that book, and I love love love the parties they throw. The whole town shows up and to a raging party–but was anyone actually invited? It doesn’t matter. It’s the talk of the town, and everyone is going. this weekend

No new embroidery this week, but I did update the display! My mom is in town visiting and the week was full of errand running and getting ready, and now that she’s here it’s full of fun. We are working on my apartment in between running around the city. I got some fabric to make pillow cases for the couch and bed. I got a new mirror for the bedroom that I hope to hang up today. I also got a flamingo blanket that #fatcat likes to nap under. Hope you all are having a great weekend! Doing a lot of work around here, hope to post some updates this week and get back to embroidery next Sunday.

see synonyms at monster (embroidery no. 7)

For #familybookclub this quarter, we read Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. (We’ll plan a video/phone chat soon to discuss!) In Middlesex, our narrator tells the story of a Greek family over three generations and a rogue gene that shows up in the youngest member of the Stephanides family and changes his fate.

Our narrator Cal is born as Callie. He is intersex, and has both male and female genitals. His family raises him as Callie, a woman, and later, after learning more about himself, he becomes Cal, a man.

To tell how Callie became Cal, he begins the story of his ancestors, starting with how his grandparents, who are brother and sister, fall in love. As Cal learns more about who he is, he visits a doctor, who calls him a hermaphrodite. Cal is young, and still Callie at this point, and doesn’t understand the word. So Callie looks it up in the dictionary. And to her horror, finds the words “see synonyms at monster.”

oodles of charm (embroidery no. 6)

I can have oodles of charm when I want to. This quote is also from Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut. I love his writing because there’s a darkness and a kind of rambling that has these brilliant quips and nuggets of truths.

embroidery display

No new embroidery this week–instead I got everything I have already done ready to put on the wall above my bed. A few weeks ago I was struggling with what to do above my bed, and I think this might be my new solution.

To get the hoops ready, I first had to paint them.

Then I placed the embroidery back into the hoops and loosely sewed up the back. And then it was time to hang them up!

#fatcat helped.

It’s been really great to take a step back and see all the work I’ve done so far. I’m really proud of my progress as a new embroiderer and excited to see what I’ve made displayed in one place. I think I can easily add more as I keep going, which was important to me, too.

Back to a new quote next week. After my vacation I’m really inspired and am excited to get going on some new quotes!

project life: chicago update

I’m home! I had the best vacation in Chicago. I am still not quite recovered. So instead of cleaning my house or making my lunch for tomorrow like a responsible adult, I updated my project life album from the weekend. You can see my first post on project life here.

I love looking through this album. And we’re only three months into the year. I used some quote cards from Elise Cripe’s blog and included the key from our hotel room and a playing card in a pocket. I also included screen shots of some texts we sent each other. But mostly I used the pictures we took from the weekend. I’ve been trying to take more pictures and really try to document 2013!

I am still obviously obsessed with project life, and I hope to keep going strong. With the fun things that are planned, it should be easy!
