new outfit: blue stripes

stripes rae's days

We get dressed every day. It can get pretty boring after a while. Sometimes, to shake me out of a rut, I try to think of a new way to wear some of my favorite pieces.

I’ve worn all of these things before, just not all at the same time. But I love the way the teal skirt goes with the thin blue stripes on my top. And the pink heels just tops it off nicely. Shoes from Zara, skirt and top from the Loft.

It’s no secret that comic books are my new favorite thing. But I fell in love with some comic-book-inspired Philip Lim sweaters last year, before I read my first one. They are cheeky and cool–and just fun, right?

Unfortunately the real deal was over my budget. Philip Lim did come out with a Target collaboration recently, but it was sold out at my Target.

So I made my own.

I started with a beautiful gray crew neck from the boys section at Target.

Then I designed my own version of ka-pow on InDesign. I printed my stencil and used it to cut out felt, which I then arranged and sewed onto my sweatshirt. I like using felt for a lot of projects because it’s sturdy and pretty–but most of all because the edges are finished and that saves a few steps for me.

I used top stitching to secure the letters. I could have hand sewn it and made it a lot more perfect, but I wanted the speed that came with my sewing machine. I’m considering my imperfect lettering as part of the comic book charm.

This whole project took me one afternoon–I felt like a crafty superhero.

welcome picnic and what i wore

picnic outfit

As you guys know over the weekend I went to a wedding and had a blast. The day before the wedding, our friends hosted a welcome picnic for the guests to relax and get to know each other. It was at the venue, which was gorgeous, and the food was good and the company was even better. This is what I wore.

Pants from Banana Republic, shoes and top from Target, sweater from Uniqlo, and clutch from Kate Spade.

what’s in my bag, traveling edition

I meant to take a picture of my traveling outfit but in the rush of actually traveling, I forgot. So here’s a picture of me surreptitiously taking a selfie at the airport.

Here’s another.

The rest of my outfit is jeans and leopard print flats.

I am pretty stoked about my small personal item carry on today, though. I brought my new giraffe tote bag from the Brooklyn Flea so even in a different state I can tell people how Brooklyn I am. But really it’s the perfect size. In it I have my work computer, my iPad, my phone charger, a scarf, a Crate and Barrel catalog, a bottle of water, and the graphic novel The Sandman. (One of my great fears is not having something to read, so obvs I have a iPad and two paper back-ups. Overkill? Maybe.)

And because of a stroke of genius I had last night, I used a clutch to hold all of my regular purse items. Ok ok, maybe it’s obvious and you figured this out before me but then why didn’t you tell me about it?!

In my purse within a purse is my glasses, notebooks, wallet, phone, lipstick, bobby pins, Advil, etc. So now if I need something, I can just grab the pouch instead of searching through a giant tote.

So these are my traveling essentials–for today at least. What’s in your bag?

new outfit: casual

rae's days casual

Sometimes, when you need to run errands and pack and just get stuff done, casual is the way to go. This weekend was one of those times. So I threw on a plain gray top, some trusty navy shorts, my leopard flats, grabbed my tote bag and walked out the door. An easy, simple look for when your day is not.

new outfit: a touch of fall

20130906-113457.jpg
All of a sudden it feels a bit like fall. This was quite unexpected for me, but here we are. I’m wrapping up the week with some fall colors and patterns: black, deep yellow, and leopard.

Skirt from Banana Republic; shoes, top, and bag from Target.

I’m so glad it’s almost the weekend. Had a short week this week, and I’ll have an even shorter one next week. This weekend will be for last minute wedding prep–laundry, speech writing, and packing for sure. Happy Friday!

what would glitz wear

glitz

I’m a little more than halfway through Glitz (Kindle here), my first Elmore Leonard novel. I can see why they make great movies. The dialogue is natural and entertaining, and the characters are interesting–from the off-duty detective to the casino’s lounge singer to the gangster’s bodyguard. I like how the women are equal players. Nancy Donovan is smarter than most–if not all–of the men surrounding her, including her husband. Linda is comfortable in her personality and ready to make her own way as an artist. They may have to play a man’s game, but they rewrite a few rules.

These women are sexy, but they aren’t just there for sex. But I bet no matter what they are doing, they look good doing it.

nancy donovan in glitz

Like Gretchen Wieners, Nancy keeps secrets in her perfectly coiffed hair. She runs a casino with her husband, Tom, and at least one Atlantic City gangster. And she can run circles around them. Nancy is always put together and she is not to be trifled with.

iris

Iris is a young, beautiful girl from Puerto Rico who dreams of being a hostess in the United States. She is spunky and fun but, man, does she have some bad luck.

linda

Linda Moon befriends Iris in Atlantic City. Out of all these women, I’d most like to be friends with her. She has her head on straight and is following her passion for making music. But she’s practical, too, and has figured out a way to make a living by singing in Nancy and Tom’s casino. And, like the rest of the casino, she could be decked out in gold when she performs.

ladonna in glitz

Ladonna is the former Miss Oklahoma. But I’m afraid she’s fallen a bit from when she took the crown. Now we never see her without a drink in her hand, and she’s terrified for her life because of the violence surrounding her. We first meet her drowning in both an oversized sweater and an oversized bloody mary.

I can’t wait to read more about these women, and the rest of the characters. More on Glitz soon!

new outfit: patterned pants

rae's days ootd new pants

I’ve been looking for patterned pants for a while now and finally stumbled on the perfect pair from Banana Republic. I’ve been so into green lately, and these are green and gorgeous and have a cute, tiny pattern that doesn’t overwhelm. I paired them with a gray T and my blue blazer. I can’t wait to wear these with a thousand things–like Jack Donaghy I’m into power clashing.

Pants from Banana Republic, shoes/T shirt from Target, bag from H&M, blazer from Marshals.

Happy Labor Day weekend! I hope everyone has a safe, fun long weekend. I’m planning lots of relaxing and hopefully some fun in the sun.

new outfit: summer brights

rae's days work outfit

Teal, orange, and yellow are a few of my favorite colors. And while it’s still summer, I’m going to keep wearing brights. (Though let’s be real, I’ll keep wearing them in winter, too.) Shoes from JC Penney, skirt from the Loft, sweater and bag from Target, necklace from H&M.

kites, the beach, and what i wore

beach coney island

We are quickly running out of weekends in the summer. Luckily I got down to the beach for a few hours in the sun over the weekend. I’m not too far from Coney Island and Brighton Beach, and it’s one of my favorite summer spots. It’s easy for me to get to, a free public beach, and it’s full of people and colorful fun. There was a breeze the day we went, and we saw a ton of kites flying. I am so thankful I live close to the ocean. And this is what I wore (over my bathing suit, of course).
